The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations lead by H.E. Ambassador Aksoltan Ataeva with her team of diplomats presented the draft resolution “World Bicycle Day” to the floor of the General Assembly of the United Nations for adoption of the Resolution 72/272 the World Bicycle Day for the 72nd Session of UNGA. This idea was brought forward by Montgomery College sociology professor, Dr. Leszek Sibilski to the Mission of Turkmenistan. Our professional collaboration turned out to be successful.

This well-overdue opportunity to promote the bicycle should serve as a catalyst to further promote active mobility worldwide. We appreciate all 193 Member-States for their consensus in supporting the World Bicycle Day and we are grateful to those 56 countries who volunteered to be co-sponsors. We would also like to acknowledge those individuals and organizations who worked day in and day out for the sake of promoting worldwide bicycle usage. Without their contributions, we would not have been able to achieve our goal.

We are looking forward to working together with all to advance cycling and the bicycle’s standing in daily lives in developed and developing countries in the near and distant future all over the world. The adoption of the UN Resolution World Bicycle Day creates an opportunity for all involved in active mobility to unite forces and to turn our attention and energy to utilizing our success for meaningful outcomes for generations to come.
